National® 1551

National® 1551 is a specially processed, Pregelatinized Corn Starch NF prepared under carefully controlled conditions. National 1551 swells in cold water and develops strong binding or adhesive properties.

Features & Benefits:

As a tablet binder, National 1551 may be dry blended with other ingredients and easily granulated. This method provides a more uniform distribution of the starch binder, which results in tablets that are harder and more resistant to “capping”.
National 1551 offers the tablet maker the advantages of reduced labor, improved performance, and economy by eliminating costly cooked paste preparation, and in many cases, by permitting the reduction of binder level.

Applications:

National 1551 is used as a binder, filler, and disintegrant in a wide variety of pharmaceutical applications.
Tablet Binder: National 1551 pastes are prepared by sifting the material into water using good agitation. Allow to stand to obtain maximum hydration. No heat is needed to paste the starch.
Tablet Disintegrant: Small amounts of National 1551 can aid tablet disintegration when added to the formulation after granulation and before compression. Generally, levels below 2% are recommended.

National 1551 may be dry blended with other ingredients, and this mixture granulated with just a water or steam spray. This technique eliminates the needs for cooked-paste preparation and allows for a more uniform distribution of the starch binder throughout the granulated product.
